Origin of Salem's Name
Originally called Pond Town because of a pond created when early settlers dammed a stream, the name was later changed by Lyman Curtis to "Salem" which means "City of Peace."

The "Dream Mine" of John Hyrum Koyle is a well- known story of the town. Koyle dreamed of mining rich ore on Salem's hillside. After selling shares in a venture, he dug a deep shaft. Unfortunately, he never found any ore.
